Therefore, in honor of this American’s favorite food holiday, I went on a peanut butter and jelly recipe hunt and came across some freaking amazing ideas that people add into the mix. I’m talking strawberries, oats, raisins and even BOOZE, for crying out loud. It’s kind of like peanut butter is the new black. It goes with everything.

There’s something cool about peanut butter that I badly wanted to share with you. Did you know that you can make peanut butter at home without a recipe? I mean, it’s literally a 1-ingredient thing.

So what you do is rip open a bag or a jar of shelled peanuts, dump some into your food processor and then…just turn it on. That’s right! Not even a recipe, really. Just turn it on and let it chop and spin until you see the peanuts turned into peanut butter before your very eyes.

One thing, though—let it go a teeny bit longer when you think it’s done. It will get even more creamy, I promise you. You’ll notice a difference in the consistency. If you prefer your peanut butter super duper creamy, you could add a drizzle of peanut oil in there while it’s spinning. But you don’t have to. Peanuts have lots of natural oils that come out during the processing.

Then, just scrape the sides with a spatula and get busy with one of the awesome peanut butter and jelly recipes I rounded up for you here.

By the way, if you make loads of peanut butter and have some left over after your recipe, just store it in a covered container in the fridge. Since it’s entirely homemade, it has no preservatives, so you can’t leave it in the pantry like you would do with a jar of Jif. If you want to use it and it’s too hard, just let it sit on the counter at room temperature for a few minutes.

Oh, one more thing. If you want to add some stuff to your peanut butter, even before you use it in a recipe, you can. That’s the beauty of peanut butter. (I told you it’s the new black!) You can mix in some spicy cayenne, some nutmeg, some sea salt, chocolate chips, or anything else your heart desires.

Just don’t mix it with anything too weird. Onions are probably too weird, okay? Don’t go nuts. Or actually, do go nuts. You can mix in other kinds of nuts in your peanut butter to make the taste more complex. Cashews, almonds and Brazil nuts are all good choices.
